Just getting started? Need a biography? Need an encyclopedia article? Need some statistics?
You have access to an extensive ONLINE REFERENCE COLLECTION. Most of these resources are accessible from off-campus. These reference works are great sources for general expert information and overviews in a subject area. Every subject area will have dedicated reference works.
The links listed below will take you to selected REFERENCE works for each subject area. The corresponding ARTICLE DATABASES are located on the same page just below the reference works.
SOCIAL SCIENCES:
CULTURAL & MULTICULTURAL STUDIES
Kendall Library has a diverse print reference collection available in the Library.
ENCYCLOPEDIAS & DICTIONARIES
Encyclopedias provide basic information about topics and are often written for people who do not have in-depth knowledge, experience, or subject expertise about the topics. Some encyclopedias are comprehensive covering all knowledge, while other encyclopedias focus on an entire discipline. These are great resources to consult when you are just starting research on your topic.
REMEMBER: REFERENCE works ARE NOT the same as the ARTICLE DATABASES which offer access to published materials from magazines, newspapers, & journals. FIND ARTICLES - DATABASES will provide access to articles published in magazines, journals, and newspapers . The cool thing here is that you can often find FULL-TEXT articles you can read, print out, or email to yourself. NOT ALL databases provide FULL-TEXT. CLICK HERE for access
The LIBRARY CATALOG is the tool you use to search for books, videos, CDs, and other materials located in the KENDALL LIBRARY.
MELCAT - Is an online catalog with over 200 Michigan libraries participating. Kendall Students, Faculty, and Staff can borrow available materials from these libraries.
WorldCat - WorldCat is an international library catalog, that contains more than 52 million records describing items owned by libraries from all over the United States and around the world. Materials found in WorldCat include books, journals and magazines, musical scores, maps, and films. This is a good resource to search for materials.
REMEMBER: Use the Library Catalog, MeLCat, and Online
Databases to access materials found in WorldCat. You cannot request
materials through WorldCat.
Need to find a particular magazine, journal, or newspaper? Ulrichs's contains information on 250,000 periodical titles (including academic and scholarly journals, consumer and trade magazines, newsletters, and ’zines), and includes information as publication details and indexing sources (databases).
FIND IMAGES - ARTstor, Grove Art Online, and numerous other online resources are available to search for images.
REMEMBER: You will need to cite all the information sources you use in your paper or project.
